A Fascinating History

The Green Man Inn in Fownhope traces its origins to around 1485, when it was first known as The Naked Boy, a humble alehouse serving villagers and passing travellers. Over the centuries, its timber-framed structure and grand inglenook fireplaces became a familiar refuge, even hosting magistrates during the Civil War. In 1985, it was granted Grade II listing, recognising its historic character. Today, The Green Man Inn combines five centuries of heritage with refined, modern hospitality, offering real ales, seasonal menus, and seventeen charming bedrooms, all in the heart of the Herefordshire countryside.

Fownhope & Wye Valley

Fownhope is just enchanting, a picturesque Herefordshire village wrapped in lush countryside and old English charm. Timbered cottages, a gentle church spire, and winding lanes make it feel wonderfully timeless. Nearby, the Wye Valley unfolds with rolling hills, riverside walks, and the quiet splendour of nature. It’s all so peaceful, like stepping into a heritage storybook, simply idyllic and beautiful.
